Focus and scope

The GENETIKA, the journal of the Serbian Genetics Society, is dedicated to genetic studies of all organisms including genetics of microorganisms, plant genetics, animal genetics, human genetics, molecular genetics, genomics, functional genomics, plant and animal breeding, population and evolutionary genetics, mutagenesis and genotoxicology, biotechnology and reserch in agriculture and foresty. The journal GENETIKA publishes original papers (scientific articles, reviews, short communication) that have not been published previously.

The GENETIKA is an Open Access journal and is issued 3 (three) times per year. Contributions to journal shall be submitted in English language.

The Genetika does not charge authors an article processing charge (APC).

Submission of a manuscript to the editor implies that it has not been previously published (except in the form of an abstract, a published lecture, or an academic thesis), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form without the written consent of the editor, that its publication has been approved by all co-authors as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institution where the work was carried out.

Peer Review Process

When a manuscript is submitted to the GENETIKA, it undergoes an initial prescreening by the Editor-in-Chief to determine whether or not the paper fits the scope of the journal. If the manuscript meets the journal’s standards for publication, the paper will undergo the review process. The Genetika conducts a double-blind peer review process. In the main review phase, the Editor-in-Chief sends the received papers to two or three experts in the field. In the final section of the evaluation form, the reviewers must include observations and suggestions for improvement that are sent to the authors, without the names of the reviewers. All the reviewers of a paper remain anonymous to the authors and act independently before, during, and after the evaluation process. They have different affiliations, and they are not aware of each other’s identities. If the decisions of the two reviewers are not the same (accept/reject), the paper is sent to thrid reviwers.

When a manuscript is ready for printing, the corresponding author will receive a PDF-formatted manuscript for proof reading, which should be returned to the Journal within 2 days. Failure to do so will be taken as the authors are in agreement with any alteration which may have occurred during the preparation of the manuscript.

Open Access Policy

Articles published in the Genetika will be Open-Access articles distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License, which lets others distribute and copy the article; create extracts, abstracts, and other revised versions, adaptations, or derivative works of or from an article (such as a translation); include it in a collective work; even used for commercial purposes, as long as they credit the Author(s), provide a link to the license and indicate if changes were made. However, this is not allowed to be done in a way that suggests the licensor endorses the use, nor is it allowed to modify the article in such a way as to damage the Author’s honor or reputation.
License CC BY-NC-ND was active by 2024, Volume 56, Issue 3. License CC BY is active from 2025, Volume 57, Issue 1. Older PDFs and articles will stay under primary license CC BY-NC-ND.

Research Data Policy

The Serbian Genetic Sociaty strongly encourages authors to share the research data that support their published findings. Making data openly available enhances the credibility and impact of a manuscript and aligns with our commitment to the principle: “as open as possible, as closed as necessary”. Research data can include, but are not limited to: raw data, processed data, software, algorithms, protocols, methods, materials. We strongly support authors to deposits their datasets in free available repositories (where it is appropriate) or provide them as Supplementary Material or supplementary files (Dataset) whenever possible. GENETIKA strongly encourages authors to select a repository that issues a persistent unique identifier, such as a DOI or an Accession Number. This will help facilitate the discoverability and citation of deposited data. We accept a wide range of supporting materials, including high-resolution images, background datasets, large appendices, data tables, and other relevant materials that cannot be included in the main article.

Data availability statements should include information on what data are available, where these can be found, and any applicable access terms. It may take one of the following forms or a combinaton thereof:

  • The datasets or corresponding analyses generated during this research are available in the [NAME] repository, [link to DATASETS provided]
  • The datasets and corresponding analyses generated during this research are not publicly available due to [REASON WHY THE DATA IS NOT PUBLIC] but are available from corresponding author upon request.
  • All data or corresponding analyses generated during this research are included in Supplementary Material and/or Data Sets

Research involving human subjects must comply with the Declaration of Helsinki and be approved by an Ethics Committee.

Editorial Policy

 Editorial Process

When a manuscript is submitted to the GENETIKA, it undergoes an initial prescreening by the Editor-in-Chief and appropriate members of the Editorial Board to determine whether or not the paper fits the scope of the journal. If the Editorial Board establishes that the manuscript meets the journal’s minimum standards for publication, the paper will then undergo the review process.

After completion of the peer review process, which is described above, the manuscript enters the editing phase and is sent to the technical editor. If any additional corrections are required, the manuscript is returned to the author. After any minor technical corrections that do not require further peer review, the article obtains a DOI and is uploaded to the doiSerbia webpage: https://doiserbia.nb.rs/journal.aspx?issn=0534-0012

Publishing Ethics

The GENETIKA strives to ensure the accurate, timely, fair and ethical publication of a scientific paper. Therefore, it has adopted clear and strict guidelines for all parties involved in publication of a scientific paper: the author, the editor, the peer reviewers, and the publisher.  Conflict of Interest

When submitting a manuscript, the corresponding author has to disclose any actual or perceived conflicts of interest on the part of any author. A declared conflict of interest does not imply any unethical behavior. A declared conflict informs all parties about relationships that could affect scientific judgment. Potential conflicts of interest include affiliations, financial relationships, personal relationships, or funding sources that could be perceived as influencing an author’s objectivity regarding the content of the manuscript. A conflict of interest disclosure is published at the end of the article.

Conflict of interest statement

Procedures for dealing with unethical behavior

The Editor is responsible for deciding which articles submitted to the journal will be published. The editor is guided by the policies of the journal’s editorial board and constrained by legal requirements in force regarding libel, copyright infringement and plagiarism.  Articles that have been published shall remain extant, exact and unaltered as long as it is possible. However, very occasionally, circumstances may arise where an article is published that must later be retracted. The main reason for withdrawal or retraction is to correct the mistake while preserving the integrity of science; it is not to punish the author.

Occasionally but less frequently, the articles may represent infringements of professional ethical codes, such as multiple submissions, bogus claims of authorship, plagiarism, and fraudulent use of data.

Retraction policy

Legal limitations of the publisher, copyright holder or author(s), infringements of professional ethical codes, such as multiple submission, bogus claims of authorship, plagiarism, fraudulent use of data or the like require retraction of an article. Occasionally a retraction can be used to correct errors in submission or publication. Standards for dealing with retractions have been developed by a number of library and scholarly bodies, and this practice has been adopted for article retraction by the GENETIKA: In the electronic version of the original article, a link is made to the retraction note where it is clearly stated that the article has been retracted. The original article is retained unchanged, save for a watermark on the PDF indicating on each page that it is “retracted.”

Self-archiving Policy

GENETIKA allows authors to deposit Author’s Pre-print, Author’s Post-print (accepted version) and Publisher’s version/PDF in an institutional repository and non-commercial subject-based repositories, such as PubMed Central, Europe PMC or arXiv, or to publish it on author’s personal website and departmental website, at any time after publication. The copyright and source must be acknowledged for deposit of Author’s Post-print or Publisher’s version/PDF, and a link must be made to the article’s DOI.

The journal GENETIKA publishes original papers, short communications, review articles on topics in genetics and letters to the Editor. Submission of a manuscript to the Editor implies that it has not been previously published, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form. Authors must to ensure the accurate, timely, fair and that all research material they publish confirms to internationally accept ethical guidelines. Submitted articles should be original contributions presenting original research. Review articles and papers describing new techniques and methods in genetics will be considered as well. Submitted articles must be written in English. While there is no restriction to the number of words and figures, the GENETIKA encourage a concise writing style.

When preparing manuscript for submission author/s are obliged to follow carefully these guidelines. A submission that does not meet the basic format and manuscript organization requirements of journal GENETIKA will not be taken into consideration.

Articles are subjected to a three-tier pass-process: articles that meet the basic format and manuscript organization requirements will be forwarded for peer review to two independent referees from the area of research of the submitted manuscript. If one referees opinion is negative manuscript will be forwarded to the third referee. Only articles that pass these two steps will be subjected to plagiarism screening to identify misused text.

Format requirement

Manuscripts must be written in English, and submitted as a MS Word file, double-spaced in Unicode Times New Roman, normal font spacing, font size 12 pts, normal margin page layout with justified alignment. The style should be clear and concise.Section headings are bold all caps font, subheadings are bold sentence case font. In the body of the text there are no bold fonts, numbered paragraphs/sections, bullet points, tables, graphs, or figures. The first line of a new paragraph should be indented (left-indent, 1 cm). Do not use footnotes. Standard abbreviations can be used without explanation. For specialized abbreviations, the name should be given first in full, with the abbreviation in parentheses. Latin names of species and genera should be italicized.

The original papers should be arranged in sections as follows: Cover Page, Statement, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgment, Author´s contribution, Data aviability statment, References, Figure and Tables.

Cover page: The Cover page should contain the title, name and affiliation of the author/authors (Each author must list an associated department, university, organizational affiliation, address, city and country).  The author, designated as the corresponding author, must provide an email address that will be published if the article is accepted. The Short Title must not exceed 45 characters (with spaces) and should state the theme of the paper. Statement: Results presented in this paper are original, not published before and paper is not sent to the publication in another Journal. ORCiD links, leading to fully presented profiles, are mandatory for every author and a prerequisite for manuscript consideration.

Abstract: The abstract no longer than 400 words, includes the objectives of the study, experimental approach, major results, and conclusion. Keywords: Five keywords for indexing should be provided after the abstract that will be used for indexing purposes. Keywords that are too general and have multiple concepts should be avoided. Abbreviations:  The full name must be given on first use and only once in full, with the abbreviation or acronym in parentheses; the acronym should be used consistently thereafter.

Introduction: The Introduction should provide a clear, concise and informative overview of selected recent literature relevant to the topic of the manuscript, a description of the problem addressed in the manuscript and the aim of the work. Materials and Methods: The Materials and Methods should be divided into appropriate subsections. This section should provide enough detail to allow full replication of experiments. While detailed description of novel protocols is encouraged, well-established methods can be cited as articles where the protocols are described in detail. Scientific names of plant and animal species is written in italics. It consists of two words: the genus name, which is always capitalized, and the species epithet, which is never capitalized. Once a full scientific name has been used, the genus name may be abbreviated by its first letter. The names of families, orders, classes, phyla, and kingdoms are capitalized but not italicized. Gene symbols should be italicized; gene names written out in full are not italicized; protein products of the loci are not italicized.. Apply SI Unit rules and style conventions. The SI prescribes inserting a space between a number and a unit of measurement and between units in compound units, but never between a prefix and a base unit (9.0 cm, not 9.0cm or 9.0 c m. Decimal mark is dot, never a comma. Numbers between −1 and +1 require a leading zero (0.01, not .01). All numbers should be given as numerals ( “In 3 experiments…”, “…5th group”). The percent symbol % is written without a space (10% not 10 %) as should temperatures (10°C) . Seconds are written as “s”, hours are written as “h”. A list of primers, specialized methods, calculations, sites, localities, etc., must be either incorporated in the appropriate section in the text  or presented as Supplementary Material. The ethics statement: Research involving human subjects must comply with the Declaration of Helsinki and be approved by an Ethics Committee.

Results and Disscussion: The Results and Disscussion can be given as one section or separetly. This section can be divided into subsections, each with a concise subheading, as appropriate. The Results should present clearly and concisely the researchers’ findings and Discussion should provide an interpretation of the presented results. Gene, mathematical symbols and scientific names should be italic. Conclusions: The Conclusions section is obligatory. It should provide a general, brief and appropriate summary of the presented findings. Acknowledgments: Funding sources and persons who contributed to the work but do not fit authorship criteria should be included in the acknowledgments. Authors’ contributions: This should include a statement of the different responsibilities that specifies the contribution of every author. Data availability statement: The Serbian Genetic Society strongly encourages authors to render the data supporting their published findings openly available. Data availability statements should include information on what data are available, where these can be found, and any applicable access terms. The data presented in this study are openly available in (repository name, doi, handle or other persistent identifier, reference number). The data supporting this article are available in the online supplementary dataset. The supplementary dataset or data report must be carefully formatted and not submitted as unorganized data.

References: The References should be given separately and arranged alphabetically, as follows: author(s) name’s initials and full last name(s), all capitalized, the year in brackets, the title of the paper, the title of the journal (for books: the name(s) of editor(s) and the address of the publisher); volume in italics, number in brackets and pages (first – last). The title of journal should be abbreviated according to the international system of abbreviations. If there are two or more papers of the same author(s), they should be listed by chronological order. If the same author(s) appears several times in the same year, letters should be added. If one author appears individually and as the first author with several co-authors, his individual papers should be listed first. Unpublished papers could be listed only if they are already in press. The references cited in the text should be capitalized and should include the author(s) name(s) and the year of publication in brackets. When more than two authors are cited, the first author’s name should appear followed by: et al.

Tables and Figures (jpg), should be given separately and referred to in the text by Arabic numerals according to their order of citation. Their approximate position should be indicated in the text. Authors must provide editable tables, written in WORD: use the Microsoft Word Table function to make tables. Format the tables using Word’s Table function; do not use tabs or spaces to create a table. Tables should be black and white, and rows and columns should not be shaded. Table fonts are in Unicode Times New Roman, font size 10 pt, single-spaced. Ensure consistency between the text and the tables (e.g., abbreviations, group names, treatment names, units of measurement, etc.).  The title should be typed above the table, concise and clear. The footnotes should be explicit and typed below the table.
If more data are presented then could be printed on B5 paper form suggestion is to prepare separate tables label as a, and b. Figures and photos should be of good quality, legible and clear even after size reduction. They should be grouped wherever possible. When a composite figure is comprised of different plates labeled A, B, C, etc., it must be presented as ONE COMPLETE FIGURE that contains different plates, not as a figure comprised of several smaller independent plates. The caption and the legend must be given on a separate sheet. Do not include the figure number, title, or caption in the figure file. Photos in color will only be published (printed version) at the author’s expense. The appropriate request should be submitted together with the manuscript. Every supplemental table and figure must be properly labeled and referenced in the manuscript, starting with Supplementary Table S1/Supplementary Fig. S1.

The Summary, written in Serbian, contains the following: the Title, Author’s name(s) and affiliation and text of up to 250 words.

Short communications do not have to be divided into sections, but Abstract should be included. New techniques and methods may be submitted as short communications. Review articles should give thorough studies on particular topics in genetics. They do not have to include experimental details. Letters to the Editor (up to 2 pages) usually relate to the comments on published papers or to the opinions and discussions on the most recent results within different fields of genetics. Short critical reviews and suggestions are also accepted. They all do not include Abstract and Summary in Serbian.
