Abstract

Lugić Z., Kosana Konstantinov, M. Ivanović, D. Marinković and G. Milošević (1994): Variability of red clover (Trifolium pratenaseL.) for the process of biological nitrogen fixation. - Genetika, Vol. 26, No. 3, 141-146.

Four cultivars of red clover were evaluated for the variability of the intensity of biologixal nitrogen fixation. Red clover plants were grown under semi-controlled conditions. Seven indicators of the intensity of biological nitrogen fixation: DM yield per plant, plant height, root length, dry root mass, number of nodules, crude protein content and nitrogenase, were monitored for ninety days after planting.

High variability, for DM yield per plant, root mass, number of nodules and nitrogenase was detected both among and within cultivars. Variations for plant height and root length were significantly lower, while variability for crude protein content was very low. The closest correlations were noted for yield of DM per plant and the following traits: plant height, root mass and number of nodules. Crude protein content was in negative correlation with a majority of the other parameters tested. Correlations for nitrogenase and other traits were intermediate to close, but due to the low number of correlation pairs they were statistically significant only for crude protein content. The results obtained indicate that the variability of red clover for intensity of biological nitrogen fixation is high, and mat there are good chances for increasing the intensity of biological nitrogen fixation by selective breeding of this species.

Key words: correlation coefficient, cultivar, nitrogen fixation, red clover, variability.

The degree of individual genetic homozygosity has been estimated according to the presence of cca. 20-30 qualitative homo-recessive characters (,,HRC-TEST"), in samples of healthy and diseased individuals. In the majority of such studies an average increase in HRC's was found among patients with a number of diseases (e.g. urogenital and neuropsychiatric diseases, endemic nephorpathy, myo-tonic dystrophy, diabetes mellitus, chronic lymphocytie leukemia, congenital hip dislocation, Ca uteri). A similar or lower mean homozygosity was found in samples from patients with allergic bronchial asthma, some intestinal diseases, and Ca mammae, showing, however, a significant difference in the frequency distribution of the studied traits. Further applications of HRC-testing may have practical use in genetic counselling, since homozygosity seems to be correlated with an individual's susceptibility to different diseases.

Abstract

Janić I., D. Škorić, V. Ivanović-Deretić and E.Stojimirović (1994): Chromosome abnormality iso 12q in an infant with acute monocyte leukemia (AMOL-M5).-Genetika, Vol.26, No.3, 157-162.

The paper presents the clinical, phenotype and genotype characteristics of acute monocyte leukemia AMOL (M5a) in an infant. Clinically, the disease was characterized by an abrupt and nontypical onset, with marked hepatosplenomegaly, hyperleukocytosis, without any signs of extramedullary localization and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).

Morphologically, the malignant cells corresponded to the characteristics of monoblast/histiocytes.

Cytogenetic analyses showed the presence of three cell clones:

46, XY, inv 9 (p1;q13)

46, XY, inv9 (p1;q13), iso (12q)

47, xy, +8,inv9 (p1;q13), iso (12q)

Chromosome abnormality iso12q was present in two clones. This kind of chromosome abnormality has not been described in the literature concerning patients with AMOL-M5. The constitutionally changed kariotype at the level of chromosome 9 was also found in the childs mother: 46, XX, inv9 (p1,q13) „C“.

The disease progressed rapidly and ended lethally in the induction stage of the therapy.

Key words: chromosome, abnormality, infant, leucemia

Abstract

Simović S. and G. Marković (1994): Chromosome complements of some fish species from the cyprinidue family. - Genetika, Vol. 26, No. 3, 163-174.

The paper presents the results from a study of the chromosome complements of five fish species from the Cyprinidae family. These species are common in the waters of the Danube basin. Our studies have shown that the diploid chromosome sets of the analyzed species consist of 50 chromosomes (2n=50): Chondrostoma tiasus, Albur-noides bipunctatiis, Blicca bjoerkna, Abramis sapa and Abramis ballerus. Certain differences were established with respect to the morphological types of chromosome of some of the fish species, when the results were compared with data in the literature.

Key words: chromosome complements, chromosomes, fish species, Cyprinidae family.

Abstract

Šečerov - Fišser, V. (1994): Mode of inheritance for plant height in ornamental sunflowers. -Genetika, Vol. 26, No. 3, 175-181.

Plant height is a very important character for the ornamental sunflower. The study discussed in this paper included diallel crossings, without reciprocals, of five inbred lines of ornamental sunflowers which were analyzed for mode of inheritance, combining ability and components of genetic variability for plant height in the F1 and F2 generations. Significant differences were found among the inbreed lines for the examined character.

Plant height in the F1 and F2 generations was inherited super-dominantly or dominantly dependent on the combination. The results of combining ability showed that in the inheritance of plant height, genes with non-additive effects were included.

Key words: ornamental sunflowers, plant height, mode of inheritance, combining ability, components of genetic variability

Jovanović B., S. Prodanović, and D. Stevanović (1994): Influence of diverse pepper germplasm on the inheritance of fruit characters in the F1 generation. -Genetika, Vol. 26, No. 3, 183-188.

The objcets of investigation in this study were four parental cultivars originating from two pepper subspecies: Capsicum annuum L. ssp. macrocarpum (varieties grossum and longum) and ssp. micro-carpiim (varieties acuminatum and longum). The genetical structure of the parental varieties was estimated from the values of five characters in F1 dialle hybrids, using VrWr regression analysis. The results indicated that macrocarpum varieties have predominantly dominant genes for number of fruits per plant. Microcarpum varieties contained mainly dominant genes for fruit weight. A source of dominant alleles for fruit length is ssp. microcarpum var. longum. Microcarpum varieties had mostly dominant alleles for fruit width. The variety grossum had the greatest number of recessive alleles for pericarp thickness, while the other varieties carried mostly dominant genes for this trait.

The yield and chloroplast pigment content were studied in F1 generation seedlings obtained by crossing Seyve-Villard 18315 x Black Muscat grapes. The greatest variability was found in grape yield per vine-stock, and the least in carotenoid content. The correlation coefficients obtained show that there is no significant correlation between yield and chloroplast pigment content. Different values of the observed characteristics in individual genotypes offer the possibility for selection and use of those genotypes in further breeding work.

Abstract

Tomović Z. and S. Orlović (1994): Variability and heredity of leaf morphological parameters in poplar section leuce clones. - Genetika, Vol. 26, No. 3, 201-206.

This research on the variability and heredity of leaf morphological parameters in poplar section Leuce included ten clones as follows: Populus alba, P. alba f. boleana, P. tomentosa, P. alba \P. grandiden-tata, and P. tremula cv. Astria. The following parameters were measured on leaf samples from a nursery experiment: leaf length along the midrib (X1), greatest width of leaf (X2), length from leaf tip to the place of greatest width (X3), length of leaf petiole (X4), number of veins (X5), angle between the lower pair of lateral veins (X6), deviation of leaf base from the imagined flat base of the leaf (X7), the greatest depth of incision on the leaf margin (X8), and the number of incisions (X9). In addition to the above parameters, the following relations of the paramters were considered: X2/X1, X3/ X1and X4/ X1.

The results obtained show that there are statistically very significant differences between the clones (genotypes) regarding the parameters of leaf size and number examined. In addition, very high values of heredity coefficients in the broad sense (hbs) were obtained.

CYTOGENETIC STUDY OF INTERSPECIFIC SUNFLOWER HYBRIDS (H. annum L. x H. occidentalis Riddell)

Abstract

Atlagić Jovanka (1994): Cytogenetic study of interspecific sunflower hybrids (H. annuus L.xH. occidentalis Riddell). -Genetika. Vol. 26, No.3, 207-212.

Three hybrid combinations were obtained from crossings between cultivated sunflower lines and H. occidentalis., A low percentage of irregularities (fast and lagging chromosomes) occurred during the meiosis of H.occidentalis. Chromosome bridges and fragments were not detected. Chromosome pairing in diakinesis was normal (17 bivalents). High pollen viability (90.81-97.68%) was observed.

In the F1 interspecific hybrids, several irregularities occurred during meiosis. The average number of bivalents per meiocyte was 13.39. The percentage of meiocytes with bivalents was 82.35%. Besides bivalents, univalents (9.19% of meiocytes) and multivalents (8.46% of meiocytes) were also detected in diakinesis. Fast chromosomes in metaphase I, as well as lagging chromosomes in anaphase I and telophase II were detected in a high percentage of meiocytes. Chromosome bridges and fragments were detected in 10.52% of meiocytes. Pollen viability in the F1 hybrid was low (3.72-52.94%).

The results obtained show that, although these are species with an identical number of chromosomes, differences exist in chromosome structure. This indicates that the genome of diploid, perennial species differs from the genome of annual species. The question remains open whether the basic number of chromosomes (17) in sunflower represents a single genome or several genomes.

GENETIC ANALYSIS OF THE NUMBER OF SEEDS PER PLANT IN WHITE BEAN CROSSES

Abstract

Vasić M. (1994): Genetic analysis of the number of seeds per plant in white, bean crosses. - Genetika, Vol. 26, No. 3, 213-219.

The study included the genetic analysis of the number of seeds per plant, number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod in bean crosses. Five parent populations (female components were from the domestic populations Gradistanac and Tetovac, male components were the varieties Medijana, Biser and Oplenac), six F1 populations and six F2 generations were analyzed.

A heterotic effect or the dominance of parents with higher mean vlaue occurred as the mode of inheritance in the F1. Intermediary mode of inheritance occurred for the number of seeds per pod. Heterosis was the highest with respect to the number of seeds per plant. In the F2 mean values of populations decreased. The mode of inheritance of the number of seeds and pods per plant was intermediate or by dominance of the parent with the higher mean value. The number of seeds per pod was inherited in the F2 by dominance of the parent with lower the mean value. Heritability of the number of seeds and pods per plant and number of seeds per pod was high in most of the combinations. Plants with transgressive characters occurred in the crosses with Gradistanac. In crosses with Tetovac, transgressions occurred only for the number of seeds per pod.

Abstract

Milošević-Djordjevie O. and N. Barjaktarović (1994): The reaction of human T limphocytes to cylostalies in vitro. IV. Mafosfumide and 5-fluorouracil. - Genetika, Vol. 26, No. 3, 221-226.

The effects of the alkylating agent mafosfamide and the nucleic acid analogue 5-fluorouracil were examined, as they are the most frequently used drugs for chemotherapy of cancer. We tested the ability of these agents to induce chromosomal aberrations in human lymphocyte cultures which were PHA stimulated or not. The drugs were tested in the concentrations of 9 µg/ml for mafoslamide and 11,4 x 10-3 M for 5-fluorouracil. Analysis of the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in control nontreated lymphocyte cultures from the same persons was carried out concomitantly. Mafosfamide and 5-fluorouracil induced significant increases of chromosomal aberration frequency in cultures which were not PHA activated in the period of treatment (t = 5,7*** and 6,9*** respectively). Unlike 5-fluorouracil, mafosfamide also induced a significant increase of chromosomal aberrations in cells which were PHA stimulated during the period of treatment by the agents (1 = 9,9*** and 1,2). Mafosfamide significantly induced the following types of aberrations: chromosomal and chromatid breaks (49% and 36%), achromatid lesions and dicentries (30.5% and 2%;). 5-Fluorouracil induced aberrations only of the break type.
