Abstract

Đorđević J. (1990): Effect of epistasis on grain yield in maize (Zea mays L) - Genetika, Vol. 22, No. 1, 1-7.

Additive, dominance and epistatic gene effect on maize grain yield expression were studied. The observed and expected values of heterosis were compared to assess the importance of digenic epistasis in the determination of this trait.

Abstract

Sinha B.C. and B.C. Saha (1990): Inheritance of outher glumes in six row barley (Hordcum vulgare L). - Genetika, Vol. 22, No. 1, 9-13.

The inheritance of outer glumes in barley was studied in a cross between Sabour Dwarf and BR 31. Sabour Dwarf had broad outer glumes with erectoid ears whereas BR 31 had short and narrow outer glumes with hairy tip and normal ears. It was found that the outer glumes of the central and lateral florets were controlled by separate genes. The genes governing both the outer glumes of the central florets and that of the lateral florets facing the central row, were partially dominant whereas the other ones of the lateral florets were dominant in nature.

Abstract

Mrčarica E. and J. Živanov-Čurlis (1990): The influence of phenol on the population genetic structure of Drosophila melanogaster. - Genetika Vol. 22, No. 1, 15-21.

The influence of phenol was tested on the Drotophila melanogaster population genetic structure Phenol at 0.1 percent concentration was put into the nutrient medium.

The mutagenic effect was tested after cultivation for five generations on a phenol nutrient medium by forming homozygotes for the 2nd pair of chromosomes. No increase in genetic loads was found.

Individual variability testing pointed to somewhat more marked genetic homogeneity of the population cultivated for five generations with phenol compared with the control. The toxic effects of phenol brought about a considerable decrease in lifespan and number of progeny. Upon transplantation to the standard medium, the population showed a rapid recovery.

The effect of zinc polycarboxylate cement on cell survival and the induction of chromosomal aberrations has been studied in L cells. The results show that zinc polycarboxylate cement can produce a cytotoxic effect and chromosomal aberrations in isolated mammalian cells. The most prominent effect on cell survival and chromosomal aberrations was obtained when L cells were treated for 3 hours with test-medium prepared from the fresh disks. This effect was reduced when cells were treated with the medium prepared from 24 hour, 7 and 20 day-old disks. Maximal chromosomal aberrations were:          detected in all samples at 24 hours after treatment. These aberrations could be partially or completely repaired by post-incubation of the cells for 48 and 72 hours at 37°C.

Electrophoretic patterns of six enzymes (SOD, HK, AK, EST, ALP, FH) ana three non-enzymatic proteins (HB, ALB, TRF) have been studied in liver and kidney samples of the roe deer from central Serbia (in the eastern part of Yugoslavia). This is the second part of a report on the electrophoretic characteristics of the roe deer which should serve as a basis for future population genetic and systematic studies.

Abstract

Vujanić-Varga, D. and V. Ognjanov (1990): The population of vineyard peaches in the region of the Fruska Gora Mountain. - Genetika, Vol. 22, No. 1, 37-44.

Vineyard peaches growing in the region of the Fruška Gora Mountain have been listed and studied with the aim of selecting types suitable for further reproduction or for incorporation of certain characters in new peach varieties or rootstocks.

The pubescence of the fruit skin and the white color of the flesh were inherited dominantly in 100% and 75.64% of the studied peach trees, respectively. Although the character of easy separation of the fleshy part of the fruit from the stone is inherited polygenically, all peaches in the population were the freestone type, with the exception of several clingstone types whose inheritance oasis remains to be established. The date of ripening ranged from mid-August till late October. Good germination capacity of the stones was recorded in all trees. Most trees maintained the original organoleptic characters of the fruit. All selected types, intended for either table use or seed production, exhibited satisfactory to excellent taking.

Abstract

Stamenković-Radak, M., M. Anđelković and L. Partridge (1990): Quantitative genetic analysis of mating behaviour components in both sexes of D. melanogaster. - Genetika, Vol. 22, No. 1, 45-53.

Two lines ('fast' and 'slow') within each sex of D. Melanogaster were selected according to difference in mating speed (the time till the first mating). Differences among other components of mating behaviour such as latency and copulation duration were also observed and all data were analysed by Mann-Whitney U test. The results obtained point to complexity and interaction of all mating behaviour components between both sexes in D. melanogaster and show that the behaviour of both sexes plays a role in joint evolution.

The taste sensitivity to PTC in school children aged 10-18 has been studied in Titov Vrbas - SAP Vojvodina and Nikšić - Montenegro. The data for 616 natives (at least, three generations born in Titov Vrbas), 674 Montenegrin migrants (the third generation of settlers from Nikšić) in Titov Vrbas and 630 Montenegrins in Nikšić. The frequency of non-tasters in the school children population is 28,45% (q = 0.53) in Titov Vrbas (28.90%, n = 0.54 - the natives; 28.04%, q = 0.53 - Montenegrins) and 25.40% (q = 0.50) in Nikšić. The obtained differences between the populations are insignificant, since the Wahlund variance shows that the examined population samples are very homogeneous.

Abstract

Božić-Krstić V. (1990): Frequency of ear lobe types (Lobulus auricularis) in the school children of Titov Vrbas and Nikšić, - Genetika, Vol. 22, No. 1,61-66.

In the study of frequency of ear lobe types in the sample of 1413 school children from Titov Vrbas (745 Montenegrins and 668 natives) and in 853 school children from Nikšić (Montenegrins), the presence of attached ear lobes was 32.13% (q = 0.57) in Titov Vrbas (Montenegrins - a% = 32.21, q = 0.57; natives - a% = 32.03, q = 0.57) and 27.90% (q = 0.53) in Nikšić. In both these towns, the attached ear lobe (Titov Vrbas: ♂♂ q = 0.53, ♀♀ q = 0.060; Nikšić: ♂♂ q = 0.49, ♀♀ q = 0.56) was a more frequent characteristic of girls than boys.

Abstract

Hadzi-Talkovic Sukalovic V. (1990): Changes in zein and free proline in different maize genotypes during germination. - Genetika, Vol. 22, 1, 67-73.

Zein hydrolysis and free proline content and distribution in the endosperm, scutellum and embryonic axis of maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines: OH43, Mol7 and ZPL773, were examined. The investigated maize inbred lines had different proline content in the seeds, as well as different amounts and distribution of proline during the germination period. The amount of zein hydrolysis per mg fresh weight of growing axis was found to be almost constant for the investigated inbred lines, but some temporary differences in zein degradation were evident. In addition, the amount of zein hydrolysis was not affected by the amount of free proline in the endosperm or scutellum of germinating seed.
